My Macbook is now out of battery, so its unusable. Now, if I leave my macbook unplugged for a while and then plug in the charger, for a brief second my Macbook thinks it is charging, but then almost immediately after stops charging again. My laptop charged again, until it reached about 55% and then I noticed it stopped charging again. I restarted my macbook, left it for a few minutes and then plugged it back in. I was using the laptop while plugged in when I suddenly noticed my Macbook was running low on battery.

Mentioning this.My Macbook Pro 15” touchbar from late 2017 (A1707) suddenly stopped charging the other day. As I could not find any useful docs online. I got lucky and figured this out when messing around in the settings. This moves the setting box from your second display to the display with the main setting box is open on so you can make changes.

More on why below.Ī setting box for each display pops on when you open Display Setting on macs but when your monitor is not working you can't access it unless you click the Gather Windows button. For other people who are having problems with their external display the same solution of unchecking High Dynamic Range might not work for you but you should use the Gather Windows button I mentioned.

For me I think the OS update enabled High Dynamic Range by default for my display which does not work causing the issue with my external display.
Maybe even try a different color setting. If that does not work try messing around with resolution and refresh rate if possible.

This worked for me when my secondary screen stopped working and would only show a white screen after an mac os update over 6 months ago. With your external display connected and power on go to "System Preferences" > "Displays" > click "Gather Windows" > uncheck "High Dynamic Range".
Hi, I found this thread when I was trying to fix a similar problem I had on my external type-c display after updating my 2017 macbook pro. I've done my homework, so am looking for anything other than the obvious Googling of fixits. I bought my unit new and have only had it 8 months.Īny help or advice is greatly appreciated. I took it to have diagnostics run and found out the battery was zapped - doesn't register any consistent power - and neither of the power ports register taking a charge from using multiple USB-C adaptors. I followed all of the advise/instructions/videos in trying to reset the battery, the SMC, the PRAM, etc., but nothing worked - no lights, no sounds, no fan, nothing. When I tried to restart it there was zero power to either port.
After two hours still nothing - no reboot/restart. The power chime sounded and the screen went black. As it was not plugged in to the power adaptor at the time, and I knew my battery was down below 50%, I ran and plugged it in - it has a dual USB-C power port. It suddenly started the update, the screen became black with a white apple logo and progress bar, saying something like "your screen will be black for several minutes" - I found it suspicious at the time, but went on with the update. I just had the same thing happen to my 2018 MacBook Air. Apple techs have been similarly dumbfounded by all of this. Nothing that a simple "unplug - plug-in" wouldn't solve but led me to the habit of unplugging monitors from my macbook pro when Im not actively on my desk, or between laptop "sleep" periods. For my other cables that worked on all 4 ports of my macbook, I would notice the occasional delay (rare but sometimes even an anomalously overlapping screen image) in plugging in/recognizing an HDMI monitor. Thinking I had a defective port on my Macbook Pro 2018, I rushed to the Apple store only to find that all four ports were working fine when I hooked up my macbook to their HDMI monitor setup using their cable. I once had a new perfectly functioning cable that for some reason only worked for 3 out of my 4 ports. Learned this the hard way with HDMI - USB-C cables. But I certainly tested it first with chargers and other devices such as USB transmitters (wireless keyboard/mouse) first, before trusting it with an external monitor.Īnd yes, I agree that the video output of these ports can sometimes be inexplicable. Thought I had inadvertently fried it as well until I got the port to work through an SMC Reset. The port that (temporarilly) died on mine was the one hooked up to my HDMI monitor. Thought of letting you know you're not alone.
